DEEP HOUSE, AFRO, SOUL, DISCO FUNK: SPIRIT OF HOUSE AFTERNOON SPECIAL FEAT. (ALTON MILLER) SUN OCT 11
Our House Sydney & Soul Of Sydney are proud to present one of the true pioneers of House music, ALTON MILLER (DETROIT, USA). Due to overwhelming popular demand following his Australian performances last year, Alton is back! He showed his innovation and ingenuity as a producer also extended into his DJ’ing as he seemlessly married House with his Disco Funk influences.
Alton’s musical roots are deeply connected with Detroit’s legendary club ‘The Music Institute’ which he co-founded with George Baker and Chez Damier (http://dopejams.net/index.php?p=prod…t_version=true). His trip also coincides with the release of his latest single “Waiting For You” (http://soundcloud.com/kingsofgroove/…aiting-for-you) which has attracted praise from the likes of Osunlade, Glenn Underground and Black Coffee.
So we are extremely excited to be able to have him playing a special Sunday afternoon ‘Spirit of House’ set in the open air grassed courtyard of Hermann’s Bar at Sydney University.
Expect an afternoon of exceptional music from an extraordinary talent including an eclectic mix of Deep & Soulful Motor City House flavors as well as a solid dose of the Soul & Disco Funk that has shaped and influenced his career as a Producer & DJ.
Local supports include Phil Toke, Michael Zac, Eadie Ramia, Soul of Sydney DJ’s & Dia Ibrahim (Nogora Afrobeat) on live African percussion
Limited 1st release $15 presale tickets are available from http://www.residentadvisor.net/event.aspx?414132. 2nd release $20 and $25 on the door if not sold out. Strictly limited capacity so get in quick.

ALTON MILLER
Growing up in the 1970s, Miller soaked up the musical environment surrounding him in the Motor City, taking a particular interest in the sounds of Motown, Philadelphia, Parliament-Funkadelic, and Santana. It was during the early ’80s once the “dance music crazed” Alton became friends with a young Derrick May that he decided to start spinning records, citing Chicago DJs such as Ron Hardy and Frankie Knuckles as prime influences.
By the latter part of the same decade, Miller joined forces with George Baker and Chez Damier to start the Music Institute, a short-lived but legendary Detroit club that has since become near-mythical, thanks to the pioneering techno efforts of figures such as May. Following the demise of The Music Institute, Miller took an interest in Conga drumming in addition to DJing, which led to a period between 1989 and 1991 where he toured the world with his music.
He then joined forces once again with May, first as an employee of the artist’s Transmat Records label, then as Aphrodisiac, the title under which he would begin releasing his music. Besides his EP on Transmat’s sublabel Fragile, he also released his music on Kevin Saunderson’s KMS and a series of EPs on Serious Grooves. By the mid to late ’90s, he had increased his presence in the Detroit area through a number of DJ performances and a stream of stunning twelves. His latest album ‘Light Years Away’ had been critically acclamied by the likes of Osunlade, Atjazz and Boddhi Satva

SPIRIT OF HOUSE #1: THE STREET PARTY MARCH 18th
In what was a special day, Our House Sydney teamed up with good friends Soul Of Sydney to bring its first installment of the “Spirit Of House” Block Parties. These parties allow us to pay special tribute to 30+ years of House music and its Funk & Disco roots in FREE family friendly & PEOPLE FRIENDLY out-door locations including car parks, lane-ways, parks, roof-tops and warehouse spaces around town.
The Venue: As you can see in the picture, we didn’t end up in the park for the House Picnic as we originally intended due to some ominous clouds and some pretty temperamental Sydney weather. We did however set up our Sound in this dope inner-city Car Park location smack bang between a Chinese Temple and 3 buildings.
One for the House faithful for sure! Thank you for the support kids and look out for us doing it all again very very soon! Big luv to everyone who came down and especially the DJ’s who donated their time like true champions! Look out for them playing around town; Phil Toke (Our House Sydney), James Scott (Co-Op), Phil Hudson, Agey, Ronney Farah (Shicago Bar) & Queen Shirene D’silva (Everywhere they play good music !)

Boom Boom Says Rick ‘The Godson’ Wilhite (DETROIT) @ ONE22 Sat April 7th
Boom Boom is proud to announce the first party for 2012 – One of the leaders and selectors from Detroit – Rick “The Godson” Wilhite
http://www.residentadvisor.net/event.aspx?329997
In a city brimming with the best music innovators past and present, Rick is a prominent Detroit identity who has firmly influenced the revered musical spirit of the Motor City. His now closed record store Vibes, supplied the best of the best with the records that changed the way the world danced. Rick has worked alongside electronic music luminaries such as Juan Atkins and Derrick May and is the oft-forgot, but vital member of the 3 Chairs, with Marcellus Pittman, Theo Parrish and Kenny Dixon Jnr aka Moodymann.
Rick encompasses every facet of a true DJ that we admire and aspire to. A versatile music selector – with DJ sets including R & B, Hip Hop, Techno and his favoured House and Disco. A pioneering producer – with seminal releases on labels such as KDJ, Stilove4music and Rush Hour – and a long time party promoter. Rick has learned over his 24 year career in the music industry that it takes more than a few good records to create everything that a party needs to be.
Rick will be given the keys to One22 and we will let him play for as long as he wants – so expect something big! Boasting an amazing Klipsch Sound System coupled with Boom Boom E&S DJR400 Rotary Mixer this intimate 200 capacity venue is surely going to be the place to be!

AUSTRALIAN DEEP TRIBAL HOUSE & ELECTRONICA: Alphatown Live Podcast
I was introduced to Alphatown collective many years back when the duo was warming up for Derrick May‘s & Biz-E on a Wednesday night at Gas Nightclub. From memory their set that night was very drum machine driven dance floor orientated techno. There sound in the studio and live shows have really emerged to incorporate the deeper & melodic shades of electronic music over the years & it inspirational to see quality music getting played and made so close to home.
Check out this Deep Tribal Inspired House & Techno set.
It was Friday the 13th and Mercury, Venus, Mars and Jupiter were in alignment. In keeping with the general ‘vibe’ we combined some Vorheesian tones with a cameo appearance from Caleban, an extra-dimensional being who recently made our acquaintance. Enjoy!

CLASSIC DETROIT HOUSE: Theo Parrish – Falling Up (Carl Craig Remix) Vs Theo Parrish – Falling Up (Original)
Theo Parrish – Falling Up (Carl Craig Remix)
When two of the great musical minds of Detroit Techno & House come together it is always going to be special isn’t it. Carl Craig completely stripped the original Theo Parrish cut “Falling Up” and packed it with everything from Jazz Keys, padded synthesizers and white noise like only he can. This is an absolute killer reworking that has been a favorite for us and on dance floors around Sydney for years.

And just to give you an idea of how much of Carl Craig put into this, just check out the original version below;

Organic Afro Percussion rhythms played by Detroit Percussionist, DJ and Producer Jerry The Cat, Dubbed out poetic vocals & Theo Parrish‘s signature mixing skills = Deep House Bliss.
For me this is defiantly a Theo Parrish cut that should be getting its proper dues by the ”children of the drum” & the cats making them dance in clubs and warehouse spaces.
